On the Day Instructions (2017)

Hello everyone and thank you for entering the fifth Pendock Spring Chicken Run.

I set out below final instructions which you should read carefully – particularly so this year.

Clocks forward

You may be thinking of taking it easy because the races start relatively late.  Be aware the clocks go forward on Sunday 26th March and therefore you have an hour less than you thought you might have!

Getting here/Car parking

The M50 motorway bridge which bisects the village has been closed for repair work. This means that it will take extra time for you to get to the race.

We are hoping to have a car park open which is very close the school.  At present this is in usable condition but because it is on a field if the week ahead is particularly wet the position may change.  We will send out an email nearer the time if our anticipation is that the car park will be closed.  On the assumption that the car park is open the easiest way to access Pendock will be from Tewkesbury along the Tewkesbury/Ledbury Road and turning left where signposted to Pendock.  If coming from the Malvern direction it is better to turn left at the turn for Tewkesbury at Rye Cross and follow the diversion signs then turning right for Pendock.  You will not be able to access the race car park from Pendock Cross.

Parking will be tight so please car share if possible.

The school car park is very small and is just for officials and First-Aiders.  Please also avoid parking on School Lane as you will be running along here and it will be safer and much more enjoyable if it is car free.

This year there is no car park at Grafton Lane and cars may NOT use the Lane.  In the event that we cannot use the car park it will be better to access the race from the Pendock Cross side and park on the road between Pendock Cross and Grafton Lane and between Pendock Cross and Redmarley.  This may mean a significant walk to race HQ and therefore runners are encouraged to arrive as early as possible.

Number pick-up

For all races this will be in the school hall.  This will open at 9.30am so please arrive early to save panic and to cheer on the 1k runners.  The 1k numbers only will also be available from Pendock School on Friday.

Due to the enthusiastic mix of runners and supporters flooding the 1k finish line we will not be timing the 1k fun run – so if you would like a time please self record.  It is a fun run but there will be some goodies for all finishers and a fun prize for the first girl and boy home.

  • 9:30 – car park and number pick-up at school open
  • 10:30 – 1k number pick-up closes and 1k runners proceed to start almost 1k away
  • 10:55 – 1k race briefing at 1k start at the end of the concrete section of Grafton Lane
  • 11:00 – 1k race. Non-participants please cheer the runners into the school
  • 11:05 – 5k and 10k number pick-up closes
  • 11:20 – 5k and 10k briefing in the playground
  • 11:30 – 10k race starts on School Lane approximately 100metres down School Lane from the school (up to the right as you emerge from the school)
  • 11:35 – 5k race starts in Grafton Lane. Given the new starting position 5k runners are encouraged to walk there as soon as the race briefing has finished.  It is about 0.5k.

No entries on the day

Thank you for your support for the race once again.  The races are full and there will be no entries on the day.

Condition of course

The off-road sections are mainly dry and in good condition but with a few small wet or muddy patches, but the final conditions will depend upon the weather in the lead up to the race.  The field section in particular does have some sapling and bramble roots and trailers.  Whilst we have tried to clear them there will be some inevitably that remain or have just appeared.  Therefore please be careful on this section.  The off-road sections are uneven in places.  The tracks are also uneven in places but in generally good condition and not particularly muddy.

The off-road section is on private land, so a massive thanks to Rosemary and Ed Philipson-Stow.  The views from the high section are stunning and not on a public footpath so please respect this.  Also, if there is any litter from gels, etc please dispose of them carefully to a Marshal or close to a sign if it has to be dropped.

Locally produced food will be on sale throughout.

Following the race there will be a raffle – so hand in your race number!  There will also be prize giving as soon as possible.

We all hope you have an enjoyable run.  Any questions my mobile is 07979 518396.

Yours in running

Nigel Tillott
